What is corrected age?
Corrected (adjusted) age is a premature baby's age counted from the due date. The number of weeks the baby was born before 40 weeks' gestation is subtracted from the chronological age. For example, a 6-month-old born at 32 weeks has a corrected age of about 4 months.
Until when is corrected age used?
For babies born before 37 weeks, corrected age is commonly used for growth and development assessment until about 2 years of age. Your baby's doctor decides which age to use in each situation.
Why does age matter for head shape treatment?
The skull grows very quickly in the first months, and helmet therapy works by guiding that growth. The most effective period is generally considered to be months 4–8; as growth slows, so does the effect of treatment. In premature babies this assessment is often based on corrected age.
What if my baby is younger than 4 months?
In the first months the usual approach is repositioning and supervised tummy time. If you have a concern about head shape, speak to your doctor without waiting; an early assessment keeps options open.
